While I was in New York City, I had to conquer a reoccurring fear of mine. The fear that I would get hopelessly lost and need a police escort back to Pittsburgh.
To resolve this fear, I walked in straight lines away from my hotel. I figured I couldn't get lost if all I had to do was turn around and walk back the same way I came. This worked and I started to get a feel for the neighborhood where my hotel sat. Which was, apparently, right in the center of the perfume district.
On August 7th, I set out from the Radisson Martinique on Broadway. For two blocks I walked past Korean Barbecue restaurants. When there were no more barbecues, I thought the city was becoming more diverse. There were t-shirt shops, stalls selling fruit and souvenirs, and a couple of wig distributors.
However, the diversity was just a figment of my imagination because I quickly noticed that most of the stores I was passing had hundreds of bottles of perfume crammed into their windows. I can't tell you how many perfume stores I saw. But I can tell you I walked for blocks and blocks and the perfume shops just kept coming.
Here are just a few of the shops I saw in the two blocks where I took pictures:
