On Saturday, August 16th, I went to see a production of They're Playing Our Song at the Little Lake Theatre Company in Canonsburg.
Let me tell you, the Little Lake Theatre has a lot to recommend itself to an audience.
My friend and I arrived about a half an hour before the show started, so we had time to admire the scenery surrounding the theater's compound. Living in the city, I see the three rivers all the time, but there's something so restful about standing at the edge of a calm lake near sunset.
I love going to the theater, but rarely do I get to see wildlife before the show. What a great experience.
After we enjoyed the outdoors, my friend and I moved into the theater. They do theater in the round at Little Lake, which means the actors stand in the middle and the audience surrounds them.
They have a great set up for the audience. There are a few traditional theater chairs that line the stage floor, but then tables for two and four are positioned on stadium-level platforms throughout the room so everyone can see and the whole audience has leg room.
The audience who sit at tables also have room to eat. Little Lake offers a dessert selection during intermission. My friend had a brownie sundae and I had deep dish apple pie.
With so much charming atmosphere, Little Lake impressed me before the show started. And my experience only got better. Talented actors delivered witty and funny lines written by Neil Simon. They're Playing Our Song is also a musical, so the seven person cast sang and danced to a seventies themed score. The costumes were fun, but the best prop of the night was a transforming piano/bed/couch that was wheeled all around the stage and became whatever the scene called for.
I had a great time at the Little Lake Theatre Company. It's a wonderful place to spend an evening. If you have a chance, go out and catch a show there. This place will demonstrate to you what a fabulous theater experience is all about.
