Such was the case with sushi. When I met the Travel Boyfriend in 2003, the idea of trying sushi was as foreign to me as trying to live on the planet Jupiter. I did not eat many raw veggies let alone raw fish.
However, the Travel Boyfriend grew up in Japan and simply adores sushi. He kept trying to get me to taste the stuff. Then one day, in the laundry mat next door to a Japanese grocery store, I finally submitted to trying a piece of raw tuna.
The idea of the food made me nervous, but the taste was good. I didn't know what to think. A few months later I tried another piece. I still decided I could live without the sushi in my life.
Then I took a trip to New York City with my best friend. On our last night in the big apple, we went to an asian fusion restaurant in Times Square. I ordered a sushi tuna appetizer. Suddenly, sushi was heavenly. I ordered a second piece. Delicious!
When I came home, I was a changed woman. Keeping an open mind had allowed me to finally see past my preconceived notions of sushi. Now it is a treat I beg my friends to share with me.
